CHALLENGE: Mason Specialty Tools LLC, had a major service company audit their quality system. They were implementing ISO 9001 to standardize their manufacturing, but the service company had several requirements in addition to the ISO 9001 required items. We were approached, as an ISO 9001 compliant company, with the task of hosting and modifying their current manufacturing process .
APPROACH: WMD Squared’s product data management system automatically handles revisions, historical archiving of documents and electronic sign-off signatures that assure this. Because of this when we hosted the customer’s drawings, they were certified for the design component of ISO 9001. We were also able to review the customer’s current quality manual and help them model it after our own unique, lean approach to ISO 9001. The service company that was auditing our customer also had 5 additional process steps they required. When we reviewed the manual, we were able to prove that 4 of the 5 required steps were already included in the existing processes and were able to ensure that the remaining process only required minor changes to an existing inspection.
IMPACT: After our work, the new quality manual covered their auditor’s additional required processes, and by reducing the actual number of steps, our customer experienced lower costs following project closeout.
