CHALLENGE: Motor Controls Inc. was contracted by their client to develop a more efficient telescoping cooling tower that could be produced domestically at a competitive rate to the overseas supplier. The equipment also needed to comply with the International Convention for Safe Containers, 1972 – CSC 2014 Edition. Their client handled the cooling design of the unit while WMD Squared and Motor Controls Inc. worked closely together to develop the structure of the cooling tower. The challenge was to design a stable unit that could easily telescope to a given elevation and withstand wind speeds of varying intensities without toppling, all while meeting CSC’s and the client’s operating specifications.
APPROACH: WMD Squared approached this project with a rigorous brainstorming session to gauge customer feedback and desires on certain project elements. Once a concept design was chosen by the customer, WMD Squared performed additional detailing and design work to polish the final product. Motor Controls Inc. and WMD Squared worked closely at every phase of this project to ensure timely delivery of the requested design. The finalized model was supplied to the customer for both in-house use and formal preparation of detailed fabrication prints. Normally WMD Squared provides the latter, but Motor Controls Inc. was sufficiently suited for this task.
IMPACT: The successful delivery of the telescopic cooling tower design has enabled Motor Controls Inc. to expand their potential fabrication base allowing for potential increased future business as more of these units are commissioned.
