CHALLENGE: WMD Squared was tasked by Professional Wireline Rental with creating a complete package from a conceptual idea for a pipe lift. The design specifications consisted of being able to achieve over 20 ft of travel by rack and pinion or chain, for the unit to be able to be unloaded from a trailer, to be capable of handling up to 3,000 lbs of maximum pipe weight, to be capable of handling acceptable deflection when half of the pipe weight is at the end of the trough, to have the ability to pick-up and lay-down on both sides of the unit, to consist of a moveable spring loaded stop to dampen the pipe when it slides down trough, and to have a cycle time of 45 seconds.
APPROACH: WMD Squared started their approach with rough 2d angle projections to get an idea of how to maximize the lifting distance within the chosen parameters of the cylinder. After several design reviews with PWR, WMD Squared worked on creating an entire package consisting of assembly prints, weldments, machine part drawings, hardware, and off the shelf components.
IMPACT: Once the design was completed, the entire API Design Package was handed off to the customer to proceed with ordering the equipment and fabricating. This included the fabrication drawings, hydraulic cylinder specifications, controls requirements, drive chain, pulleys, and all purchased items. These were all fully detailed out for the purchasing department.
