CHALLENGE: Tools International Corporation had several products which were API-approved but they were getting requests to increase the operating parameters on some products that could possibly withstand higher pressures. The American Petroleum Institute (API) requires that all equipment sold having the API monogram must accompany a documented Engineering Design Package, showing compliance with the specific API standard. WMD Squared was hired to confirm, through engineering analysis and testing, that the tools could handle higher pressures, as well as to create new API Engineering Design Binders to document changes in safe pressure ranges.
APPROACH: WMD Squared performed calculations on the tools to determine the design limits. It was found that with some modifications, the products could withstand the higher pressures. However, one tool had some limitations. That tool was then physically tested. The results, alongside the Finite Element Analysis, and hand calculations, confirmed that the tool was safe for use.
IMPACT: The customer was able to upgrade their tools to the high-pressure ratings, and the items were documented in the new API Engineering Design Binders.
