CHALLENGE: The customer had many old drawings (dating back to the 1980s and before) documenting the piping, valves, instrumentation, and working systems of salt mine in the Brine Processing Area. There had been many repairs and modifications over the years, and the customer desperately needed modern, up-to-date drawings. The customer’s plans to expand and update certain areas of the plant had become high priority, therefore updating the drawings was necessary.
APPROACH: Using the older drawings as a “roadmap”, WMD Squared began a series of field surveys, performing visual inspections in order to capture certain areas of the plant in an as-built state. Hand sketches were generated in the field to document valve and line sizes, media type, flow direction, overall configuration, and the associated instrumentation used to control the process. CAD techniques were used thereon to produce controlled Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams.
IMPACT: WMD Squared provided the customer an up-to-date set of drawings with which to aid future expansion efforts. This will also greatly increase the customers flexibility in troubleshooting problems in the field and will serve as a training tool for both new hires and veteran personnel.
